Accounting for Worship & Ministry Musicians
One accountant for your ministry, your music, and your money
You serve on Sunday, play gigs during the week, maybe release music or teach lessons. Your taxes cover all of it, and most accountants only understand part of it.
Isaac Mohammed, CPA, EA, works with musicians in ministry as their complete accounting partner: setting up your books, analyzing your tax situation, and handling your taxes and planning year-round, with a full understanding of both church pay and music income.

Ministry accounting servicesTax topics we help you navigate
Musicians in ministry sit where two complicated areas of tax law meet.
- Minister statusIf you're ordained, licensed, or commissioned and perform ministry duties, you may be taxed as a minister, which changes how your church pay is taxed.
- Housing allowanceMinisters may be able to exclude a properly designated housing allowance from income tax. We help you and your church get it right.
- Church pay: W-2 or 1099?Staff, contract, and per-service pay are reported differently. We make sure each is handled correctly.
- Honorariums and love offeringsGuest ministry and concert income is taxable, and the expenses that go with it may be deductible.
- Royalties, streaming, and salesSongwriting royalties, streaming payouts, album and merch sales, reported the right way.
- DeductionsInstruments, in-ear monitors, sound gear, recording, software, and travel to churches and events.
- Self-employment and quarterly taxesPlanning for the taxes that aren't withheld, so April isn't a surprise.
- RetirementCombining church retirement plans with retirement accounts for your music income.

Common questions
Am I considered a minister for tax purposes?
It depends on whether you're ordained, licensed, or commissioned and what duties you perform. Many worship leaders are taxed as regular employees, while others qualify as ministers. Your free tax analysis includes a review of your status.
I play for several churches. How do I handle that?
Each church may pay you differently, through a W-2, a 1099, or nothing on paper at all. All of it is taxable. We help you track every source and report it correctly, and we find the deductions that go with it.
Can I deduct my instruments and gear?
If you use them to earn income from your music, instruments, sound equipment, in-ear monitors, and related costs may be deductible. We help you track them and claim them correctly.
Do you work with musicians outside New York?
Yes. We work with musicians and ministries nationwide, virtually.
